YSPOR’s long awaited demonstration project has officially launched. With guidance from YSPOR’s Oversight Committee and support of government partners, the Health Human Resources Crisis, with a focus on supporting youth in accessing healthcare careers, has been selected as the topic YSPOR’s research will address.

Aligned with the Health and Social Services Health Human Resources Strategy, our research will provide Yukon specific, targeted recommendations on the “Recruit, Retain, and Learn” pillars of the strategy. A literature review conducted by YSPOR placement student Caitlyn Dignard consolidated evidence on the nature and severity of healthcare staffing shortages across the territory, and established the need for youth focused interventions.

The project’s Advisory Group, made up of members from the community who have lived experience accessing different healthcare related careers, a member of the Health Human resource Steering Committee, First Nations community members, Yukon Hospital Corporation representatives, and YSPOR researchers had its inaugural meeting in early March. The group is well on its way to identifying core research questions to guide the project, and will strive to have methodology established and an ethics proposal submitted for review by 2025. Stay tuned for future updates as this project evolves.
