My name is Nicole Anderson, and I joined YSPOR as a Junior Researcher in November 2024, based in Mayo, Yukon. From the beginning, I have felt welcomed and supported by the team, making my learning journey an engaging and enriching experience. Despite being 400 km away from the main team, I never feel alone—there is always someone available to guide me and answer my questions.

The project I am working on in Mayo is called Creative Minds: Understanding the Impacts of Arts-Based Programming on Mental Health in Mayo. This research explores how different community programs influence mental health and well-being. I am passionate about this subject because I have personally experienced the positive effects of participating in programs, especially those related to art. My hope is that this research will help us better understand what kinds of programming my community members want to see, encouraging more people to participate, learn new skills, and connect with others.

Throughout this journey, I have been learning about the important steps that take place before research can even begin. One of the key components is the Research Ethics Board (REB) process. The first step I had to complete was an ethics course, which was an eye-opening experience. YSPOR led the REB process, and I had the opportunity to contribute to parts of it. I was surprised by the length and depth of the application and how much detail is required. Before joining YSPOR, I had never encountered the REB process and had no idea what it involved. I have since learned that the REB ensures ethical standards are met, protects participants’ rights and well-being, and promotes responsible research practices by carefully assessing potential risks.
